This month saw the addition of a new Doosan NHP 4000 supplied by Mills CNC.

This fast and powerful twin pallet machine was bought with speed and productivity in mind.

The machine is fitted with Schunk zero-point fixture clamps for instant job changes with zero setup.

Unable to skate the machine through the workshop we had to call in the services of a high capacity crane to lower it through the roof instead!

This is our third Variaxis from Mazak and our 8th 5 axis capable machine. With this addition our total fleet of CNCs now stands at 15.

An additional Variaxis was the obvious choice for us. The machine will sit alongside our two other machines providing additional capacity. The added flexability of transferring existing programs quickly on to the new machine ensures maximum productivity from day one.

PB2 has good machining properties, high strength and good corrosion resistance in seawater. This makes it particularly suited to production of pump and valve components that are prone to wear or utilised in high stress applications.

PB2 also finds use in bearings operating at medium to high speeds. It also shows good resistance to impact loading or pounding.

CC492K is used for manufacture of various pressure tight castings. Applications include valves, pipe fittings and pumps. It is also frequently used for bearings where loads and speeds are moderate.

CC492K (LG4) posesses higher strength and wear resistance than CC491K. It also offers better resistance to impingement and cavitation attack while in contact with fast moving waters.

CC331G (AB1) has good strength and wear resistance with reasonable machining properties. CC331G resists tarnishing and high temperature oxidation. General corrosion resistance is good but under some conditions may suffer dealuminification.

We were recently approached by one of our customers who had an urgent requirement for 10 impellers for which we did not hold tooling.

The required delivery date for the project meant that there was not time to produce a new pattern and core box.

The only practical solution was to utilise 3D sand printing technology to achieve a rapid turnaround.

On receipt of the order CAD models were produced of the mould and core that would be needed for production. The order was placed with our sand printing partners on a 5 working day turnaround.

the cores were delivered ready for casting at the start of week 2. The mould and core assemblies were laid out on the casting platform. Gunmetal was then poured in to the mould and left to cool.

The 3D printing process allows complex vane geometry to be produced without joint lines. The result is a very neat casting which requires minimal fettling.

After a full dimensional inspection the castings were taken to our CNC Machine Shop.

The finished impellers were inspected to drawing and dispatched to our customer within the time it would have taken to produce conventional tooling

Our most commonly cast Gunmetal alloy. CC491K/LG2 is used in Valve Bodies, Fire Monitors, High Voltage Couplings, Pump Casings and many other applications. It is a very useful all-round alloy which has been in use for centuries. Also known as Red Brass, B62 or C86300 in the USA and DIN 17656 RG5 in Europe.

Its good corrosion resistance, strength and mechanical properties make it the ideal choice in pressure tight applications where the product is exposed to extreme conditions.
